Another thing is, once you do complete your conversion take some time to get used to the responsiveness. These things are amazingly zippy of the line and you have to get used to the touch of the controller (the EV version of the gas pedal).
The resons the plans are so important is that a good set of quality plans will guide you step-by-step through the entire project. More importantly though, a quality guide will provide you with priceless information on where to find your parts very very cheap - and in some cases even free. You can buy a conversion kit that will cost $6,000.00 before you even purchase a single battery, but why would you do that when you can spend $50 up front and complete the entire car for under $500.
This is why we love the Convert-2-EV guide. Most users find they save many times the cost in time and materials long before the project is complete. You get some very nice free bonuses too in the form of 4 other excellent ebooks on creating your own Solar, Wind, Bio-diesel and other renewable energy solutions for the home. These are also excellent, high quality instructional manuals. So our best advise for building your own DIY electric car is to start with the Convert-2-EV guide.
We highly recommend the Convert2EV guide to anyone who wants to complete an electric car conversion. The guide contains everything you will need to fully convert any car to electric power. The authors are true experts and after conducting many reviews, in our opinion there is no better resouce available anywhere.
This guide includes complete illustrated instructions plus valuable information on the best places to get all the parts for your DIY Electric Car.
OK, so is it really possible to build your own DIY Electric Car from parts you can obtain yourself, at a cost that won't put you in the poor house?
That's really the question we seem to get most often from skeptics. I suppose they assume that if it were really so simple, everyone would be doing it.
After all, who wouldn't rather drive for $0.04 per mile instead of $4.00 per mile, right? If people could say goodbye to the gas pump, oil changes and tune ups forever, they'd do it. Therefore, it must be difficult and highly complicated.
Honestly, I don't know why more people DON'T build their own DIY electric car. I only know that it is realtively simple to complete, Its a lot of fun to do, and it makes me look a lot smarter than I really am, because trust me - I'm no mechanic. I don't really even like getting my hands dirty that much. But when people see the electric car, they are fascinated, and they should be. It's like nothing else on the road and it's a real kick to drive too.
Anyway, you simply start with a car that is appropriate for converting and a GOOD set of plans. We like the Convert-2-EV system. In fact, its the only plan we recommend, but more on that later. Let's get back to the car.
Use somthing fairly small and light, but not too small that you won't have room to mount your batteries and motor inside. It should have a manual transmission too. That's important, but don't worry. Once your conversion is complete you won't have to shift. It's pretty amazing how inexpensively you can pick up a used car with engine damage that is in otherwise excellent condition. Check the undercarriage, breaks, trasmission, etc to make sure there aren't issues there before you buy something.
Do yourself a favor. If you do a lot of freeway driving, or take long trips, don't convert your primary vehicle. You won't be happy if you do because, although a DIY car conversion will travel at speeds approaching 60 MPH and has a range of about 200 miles on a single charge, its just not something you want to be taking across country.
