Electric Car Conversion Kits

Research prices and find them locally. In other words don't order them off the net. They are heavy and the shipping costs will eliminate any discount you think you are getting. Even if you pay a few dollars more for them, you'll usually end up spending less if you buy and transport them yourself.

While you are on with the supplier, you need to find out what the range and top speed is for the kit you are considering. Most vendors offer several configurations with different equipment and of course advertise the lowest price kit most prominently. However, you need to make sure that the equipment you get is adequate for your needs.

They will often hedge when you try to pin them down on the range and top speed saying that it depends on the weight of the vehicle and the number/type of batteries used, and they are technically correct, but they should be able to ballpark it for you. It helps this step of the research if you already know what kind of vehicle you will be converting before you select your kit. For Part 2 of this article, please see Electric Car Kits.
We  can never understand why people pay thousands of dollars for electric car conversion kits, when there are alternatives available that will accomplish the same thing at a fraction of the cost.

So does that mean electric car conversion kits are a rip-off? Absolutely not. They work fine and the parts you get are all new and shiny.

We just don't see the sense in paying $5000 or more when you could spend $500 or less instead. Especially when the same amount of work is going to be involved. Check out Conver2EV's for a low cost and highly reliable alternative to expensive car kits. The system includes all the information needed to fully convert any car to run on electric power. The authors are true experts and as far as I'm concerned, this is the better way to go - Much better than buying an expensive kit.

The first thing that everyone should know about electric car conversion kits is that the batteries are NOT included. You aren't going to get very far without batteries, so the cost of the kit isn't the "all-in" price. If you buy new batteries, you can expect to spend an additional thousand dollars or more on top of the kit price.

Electric Car Conversion Kits Shopping Tips

We definitely prefer getting a good quality guide and finding the parts locally through the sources provided in that guide. When you get to understand the mechanics of it all, it really isn't necessary to buy a new motor when the right used or reconditioned motor will be just as reliable. If you know what to look for, you can get a motor that will easily outlive the rest of the vehicle. Often you can find them very inexpensively, if not free.

Another thing we take issue with is the amount of work you will need to do. It is basically the same whether you buy a kit or not. If you have to pull the engine, you have to pull the engine. You need a charger, motor, batteries and a controller either way.

Again, there may be some advantages to buying a kit, but time and convenience aren't among them in our opinion.  If you do decide to go with one of the many car conversion kits available, contact the supplier first and find out what type of batteries and how many they recommend for the kit you are buying, but whatever you do, don't buy them.
